Algeria’s New Mining Law: between Liberalisation and Sovereignty

Law No. 25-12 of 3 August 2025 marks a major development in Algeria’s mining legal framework.

It allows foreign investors to apply directly for prospecting authorisations and exploration permits, grants exploration permit holders priority where they discover a commercially exploitable deposit, and permits foreign ownership of up to 80% in companies operating mines, subject to a minimum 20% interest held by an Algerian State-owned company.
